Derek Bardowell (he/him) is a writer, philanthropy advisor, and transformative coach. Once a music journalist and Director of Education at the Stephen Lawrence Trust, Derek managed portfolios for several major funders, like Laureus Sport for Good and National Lottery Community Fund, between 2009 and 2021, distributing over £150 million to good causes in 34 countries. Derek’s first book, NO WIN RACE, explored race and racism in modern Britain through the prism of sport. It was a Sunday Times and Financial Times Book of the Year in 2019. Derek’s current book, GIVING BACK, reimagines philanthropy through a reparative lens. His work has also appeared in The Guardian, The Times and British GQ. Derek is the CEO of Ten Years’ Time, helping donors and foundations to resource racial and economic justice with care and confidence. He is also a Knowledge Equity Fellow at Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, a Churchill Fellow, and a Thirty Percy and Mission 44 trustee. Derek currently sits on the Church Commissioners for England’s Oversight Group, advising on how it establishes a £100 million impact investment fund in response to the Church of England’s historical links to transatlantic chattel slavery.
